Eliud Kipchoge was born in Kapsisiywa, Nandi County, Kenya on November 5, 1984. Kipchoge was raised by a single teaching mother. He is the youngest among the four kids. He went to school daily by running three kilometers or two miles. He graduated from Nandi County’s Kaptel Secondary School in 1999, but he did not run actively or professionally at that time. At the age of 16, he met his trainer Patrick Sang, a former Olympic steeplechase medalist.
Kipchoge won his first individual world championship in 2003 when he claimed the junior event at the World Cross Country Championships and set a world junior record over 5000 meters on the track. At the age of eighteen, he became the senior 5000 m world champion with a championship record at the World Championships in 2003, followed by an Olympic bronze for Kenya in 2004 and a bronze at the World Indoor Championships in 2006. Kipchoge, a five-time World Championship 5000 m finalist, won silver medals at the World Championships in 2007, the Beijing Olympics in 2008, and the Commonwealth Games in 2010.
In 2012, he switched to road running and completed his first half marathon in the second-fastest time ever, 59:25. He set a course record to win the Hamburg Marathon in his first marathon in 2013. At the 2014 Chicago Marathon, he earned his first victory in a World Marathon Major. He later went on to win the series title in 2016, 2017, 2018, and 2019.
Kipchoge has won every major world marathon, except for the Chicago and New York Marathons. He is widely considered to be the greatest marathon runner in history and holds the world record with a time of 2:01:09 achieved at the 2022 Berlin Marathon. He also won the Olympic marathon titles in 2016 and 2020. He has run four of the top five fastest marathons in history.
