BOISE, Idaho (CBS2) — Skylar Meade, the man who broke out of prison during a gunfight with Corrections Officers at a hospital in Boise, is facing the death penalty in Nez Perce County for the murder of James Mauney.
Meade pled guilty in Ada County to charges of aggravated battery, escaping, use of a firearm, and aiding and abetting and was sentenced to life in prison. Meade worked with another man, Nicholas Umphenour, who helped in the escape. Prosecutors presented text messages between the two showing them plotting the escape for months.
Meade is in Nez Perce County where he was indicted on Thursday on murder charges. He is accused of murdering James L. Mauney while he was on the run following his prison break.
Prosecutor Justin Coleman filed a notice on Aug. 2 seeking the Death Penalty for the role Meade played in the murder of James Mauney.
“After long and careful consideration I have decided to seek the death penalty in this case. The senseless and random killing of Mr. Mauney and the facts surrounding what led to his death, warrants this determination,” said Prosecutor Justin Coleman.
The Prosecution says that multiple agencies found probable cause during the investigation that linked Meade to the murder.
Mead is scheduled to be Arraigned on Aug. 8 in Nez Perce County.
