Before the US Open title, Gauff also won her maiden WTA 1000 title in Cincinnati and now her coach Brad Gilbert has revealed what worked for the American. Gilbert looked at Gauff’s 2023 season and analyzed her wins.

He then talked about those wins that he thinks are the best kind of wins for their role in improving a player’s mindset and confidence. Gilbert claimed that the wins that came when Gauff seemed to have let it slip were the best ones.

She had to figure her way out of four different matches...Coco, three different times she found herself a set down, once down a break in the third. So, she had to problem-solve. And those are the best kinds of wins, where you grow the most, winning those types of matches.

The American’s coach further talked about Coco Gauff’s elite mindset and what helped her make the most of the 2023 season. Brad Gilbert pointed out that the 19-year-old always looks for ways to secure a win and that gives her an edge over her opponents.

Gilbert also talked about Gauff’s dominance. He cited the examples of her wins at the Washington Open and the Cincinnati Masters claiming that the 19-year-old looks to dominate her opponents and it eventually helps her sail through.

The ability to find a way [to win]. Find a way when you don’t have your best stuff. In Washington, we had one of those rare weeks where you just bomb through the field, and there wasn’t a close set. Even in Cincy [Cincinnati], she had only one close match, and that was against [Iga] Swiatek. All the rest of the matches were blowouts.

The American also talked about the future of their partnership. Gilbert said that he is currently not concerned about his future but is focused on pushing the youngster can achieve newer heights which she strives for. Notably, parted ways with Pere Riba a few weeks after her US Open title win. However, Gilbert retained his position and there is no indication of their partnership not going forward.

Coming to Gauff, the 19-year-old has kicked off her 2024 season with a win. Gauff beat Claire Liu in her first-round match at the ASB Classics in Ausckland. The reigning US Open champion will take on Brenda Fruhvirtova in the pre-quarterfinals.
